Peter Shilton's Nearly Men: A Plymouth Argyle Story
Peter Shilton's time at Plymouth Argyle in the early 1990s, specifically the 1993/94 season, is remembered as much for scintillating, attacking football as for the off-pitch battles between Shilton and chairman Dan McCauley. Fans still talk about that play-off season as one of the best in the club's history, even though it ultimately ended in dramatic failure. They were so close to glory. Promotion could have seen Argyle kick on and reach the Premiership. Instead, the following season they were relegated, Shilton was sacked and sued the club and the wheels were set in motion for a serious decline. Set against a backdrop of thrilling football and a city on a high, Paul Roberts' book reveals an unhappy dressing room full of cliques and divisions, and explores the fragile relationships behind the scenes at Home Park.
