At first glimpse, Layer Road - the former home of Colchester United - was little more than a ramshackle collection of tin-roofed stands, suited more to the world of non-league football than to the hurly burly of the professional game. However, this tiny stadium came within a couple of games of hosting a Premiership team as the U's swept all before them in the memorable Championship season of 2006/7.The Essex side spent 71 years at their home in the west of the town and that penultimate season summed up all that was so magical about the stadium that appeared to have so little, but offered so much.

Old Grounds - Layer Road
Layer Road Layer Road was the former home of Colchester United Football Club before being replaced by the Weston homes Community Stadium. The stadium held 6,320 spectators and was built in 1907, originally for use by Colchester Town Football Club. The last match at Layer Road took place on 26 April 2008, when Colchester lost 1-0 to Stoke City, with Richard Cresswell scoring the last goal at the stadium. The stadium was locked for the last time on 17 July 2008 after 98 years in use (71 of them as the home of Colchester United), being demolished by the end of the year.
